  • Animal welfare advocates are urging DeKalb County to revise a rule that sends abused animals back to their owners if charges drop. Lifeline Animal Shelter reported a case where dog Mahla and her puppies were left in poor condition, fueling calls for stricter follow-through.  WSB-TV

  • On Thursday, House Speaker Jon Burns introduced the Georgia Early Literacy Act of 2026, which calls for literacy coaches in kindergarten and marks a major shift in state education policy.  Fox 5 Atlanta

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Georgia lawmakers introduced a bipartisan bill on Friday evening to protect high school athletes from predatory name, image, and likeness contracts — a measure aimed at preventing binding, long-term agreements.  Fox 5 Atlanta
  • MARTA will begin using the new CQ400 trains in early June to replace older models as part of a nearly $700 million upgrade. The trains include an open gangway, added safety features, and enhanced accessibility (developed with input from over 4,000 riders) to boost reliability.  Atlanta News First
  • Lawmakers are considering a bill that would require public schools to use weapons detectors like those at Atlanta Falcons games to boost student safety. The bill — already passed a key House committee — will go to the Rules Committee while critics question its cost and logistics.  Atlanta News First
