CULTURE NEWS

  • Stone Mountain resident Jamelia Potter was crowned United States of America's Ms. Georgia 2026 and will represent Georgia at the national pageant, which values intellect and community involvement over physical appearance. She uses her platform Curves of Courage to boost confidence while working at the DeKalb County School District.  The Champion
  • After canceling its Oakhurst parade, the Mead Road Mardi Gras board lets the community celebrate at the Fare Thee Well Ball at Moonshadow Tavern in Tucker tonight to support youth music education. Celebrations feature a $25+ event in Stonecrest on Feb. 18 and a Kirkwood parade on Feb. 28.  The Champion

  • Carter G. Woodson, known as the Father of Black History Month, was born in 1875 and worked as a teacher, historian, and advocate for recognizing Black contributions—his legacy led to the creation of Negro History Week in 1926, later evolving into today's month-long celebrations in Decatur.  The Champion

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The DeKalb County School District will close more than two dozen schools in coming years due to falling enrollment that began during COVID-19. Officials say the changes will affect local education.  The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

  • Stephenson High School junior wrestler Badesire Lubala made history when he pinned Calvary Day School’s Brexton Bell for the gold medal at the GHSA State Wrestling Championships on Feb. 12 at the Morrow Center - his win came after a car accident ended his sophomore season.  On Common Ground News
  • Chamblee Bulldogs beat Dunwoody 71-62 on Feb. 10 in Chamblee (Ryan McCord scored 24 points) as they advance to face No. 3 ranked Woodward on Feb. 13 at 8:30 p.m. Decatur Bulldogs also won 56-43 over Arabia Mountain after a strong fourth-quarter run.  The Champion
