  • DeKalb County will host its 42nd Annual MLK Celebration on March 5 (celebrating Black History Month) to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy and community leaders; WSB-TV anchor Lori Wilson will host the event featuring a conversation with Ambassador Andrew Young and awarding the Nathaniel Mosby Humanitarian Award.  On Common Ground News

  • DeKalb County officials unveiled the Teen Tech Center at Hamilton Recreation Center (3272 Chapel St.) on Feb. 19. The center offers digital learning in coding, podcasting, music production, and creative media projects and is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.  The Champion

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Georgia House passed a proposal on Wednesday, Feb. 25 to extend the bell-to-bell cellphone ban to public high schools, building on last year's restriction for grades K-8.  Fox 5 Atlanta
  • Federal energy officials announced yesterday that Georgia Power received $22.4 billion of a record $27 billion loan — aimed at building new natural gas plants and upgrading power grids. The funds are planned to yield over $7 billion in long-term savings for customers.  Atlanta News First
  • Decatur’s Historic Preservation Commission approved a modified proposal on Feb. 24 to designate Beacon Hill Historic District while allowing construction of an Early Childhood Learning Center, sending the recommendation to the city commission. The final decision is expected by April 20 — with discussions planned with legacy Beacon Hill members.  Decaturish
  • DeKalb County Commission meets today at 9 a.m. at the Government Service Center on Sams Street to review a plan for a homeless day center. Officials will consider proposals that include using Peace Baptist Church for shelter services following community concerns raised earlier this month.  Decaturish

  • The Food and Drug Administration recalled a single lot of Elite Treats Chicken Chips for Dogs due to a salmonella risk, affecting products sold at local retailers and other states.
