  • The Avondale Alliance for Racial Justice honored winners of its sixth annual Black History Month Student Art Contest on Saturday, March 7 at The Museum School in Greater Decatur. EDUCATION NEWS

  • The DeKalb County School District will release an updated school closure and redistricting plan on March 20 that revisits an earlier proposal including 27 school closures, 11 expansions, and 8 conversions. Community feedback is invited via online surveys and meetings + an in-person workshop at Towers High on March 25.  The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • DeKalb County approved partnering with New Life Community Alliance and Peace Baptist Church on March 10 to open a homeless day center at 3996 Covington Highway; the center will offer meals, hygiene and job support Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. — with MARTA access.  Decaturish

HEALTH NEWS

  • A Decatur resident was diagnosed with Stage 3 colorectal cancer after a routine colonoscopy led to 28 days of radiation and four rounds of chemo. Following a nine-hour surgery that removed most of her rectum and colon, she is now cancer free and urges early screening.  Atlanta News First
  • The FDA announced a recall on clams and raw oysters (including products sold in Georgia) due to potential norovirus contamination. Local restaurants and retailers are advised to stop selling and discard these items.  Fox 5 Atlanta
