CRIME NEWS

  • A convicted killer in a 1990 cold case in DeKalb County will be sentenced soon — officials say.  Atlanta News First
  • Kenneth Perry, 56, was found guilty last week of killing John and Pamela Sumpter in 1990+ he was sentenced Tuesday morning in DeKalb County Superior Court following a trial that lasted just over a week.  Atlanta News First

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At its March 14 meeting, the Decatur Downtown Development Authority approved the final round of small business grants for Fiscal Year 2025-2025—covering up to 75% of approved project costs for key improvements at local businesses. The grants will support building upgrades, marketing projects, and storefront beautification—and may be offered again if funding is allocated in the Fiscal Year 2025-2026 budget.  Decaturish
  • Residents in the Columbia area of unincorporated Decatur will share ideas with the DeKalb County Planning and Sustainability Department at the first Community 101 event scheduled for March 26 at 6 p.m. at Exchange Park—2771 Columbia Drive; officials will discuss the county's 2050 Unified Plan and local planning needs such as transportation and land use.  The Champion
  • The Decatur City Commission approved an $8.5 million renovation project for Decatur Square in preparation for the 2026 World Cup. The plan includes a new performing arts stage, play area, and bathrooms — construction will begin in the next two months and finish before the tournament.  Fox 5 Atlanta

  • New data shows that affordable homes in metro Atlanta have become scarce as home prices rise and inventory falls. The report said many families in Decatur may face fewer housing options in the coming months—adding pressure to the local market.  Atlanta News First

  • On March 16th, more than 65 kids attended the first annual Quincy Carter Foundation MVP Baseball Camp at Gresham Park where they learned baseball skills like base running and batting.
