CRIME NEWS

  • Sandy Springs police—working with the DEA—seized 5 kilograms of suspected fentanyl and 240,000 counterfeit pills from an apartment in metro Atlanta after an anonymous tip; the bust is the largest of its kind in state history and removed enough drugs to kill 2.5 million people.  WSB-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • During Tuesday's meeting, commissioners discussed extending the Lifeline contract (adding about $2.18 million for operations until June 30 to allow more time for evaluation) and funding a contract with Horizon Structures to build six new kennels adjacent to the animal shelter in Chamblee to relieve overcrowding.  WSB-TV
  • Emory University researchers will collect data on seat belt use and driver distractions from May to August at 400 intersections in 20 counties funded by a $300,000 grant from the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety — the study will help shape new road safety programs.  FOX 5 Atlanta
  • City officials announced on March 21 at Decatur Recreation Center that Decatur became the third UNICEF Child Friendly City in the U.S. Local leaders worked with youth groups on a UNICEF framework that began in 2019 & aim to create safer, more inclusive spaces for children.  The Champion
