  • On March 29, Decatur and City Schools of Decatur celebrated the ribbon cutting of the new Legacy Park track and field (built for about $7 million with each partner contributing $3.5 million). The facility features an eight-lane track, synthetic turf field, lighting and other upgrades and is open for school and community programs.  Decaturish

CRIME NEWS

  • DeKalb County police said a 12-year-old boy named Santana went missing after leaving his home on Wedgefield Circle on Sunday and was last seen in a white shirt and black joggers—he is 5-foot-6, weighs 113 pounds, and has brown hair and eyes, and anyone with information should call 770-724-7710.  FOX 5 Atlanta

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Sarv Dharavane from Austin Elementary in DeKalb County won the state spelling bee on March 31 and will represent Georgia at the national Scripps Spelling Bee in May—joining runner-up Sara Daoud as both aim to improve on Sarv’s semifinal finish last year.  FOX 5 Atlanta
  • An 11-year-old DeKalb County student from Austin Elementary School won the Georgia Association of Educators State Spelling Bee on March 21 at Georgia State University after competing in 14 rounds with over 250 words. He will travel to National Harbor, Maryland, for the Scripps National Spelling Bee Championships from May 26—receiving awards that include $1,000, an Apple iPad Mini, a $50 Best Buy gift card, and online subscriptions.  Decaturish

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • U.S. Rep. Lucy McBath suspended her bid for governor less than a month after filing paperwork for an exploratory committee when her husband was diagnosed with cancer — she said she would now focus on his treatment. Her decision comes as the race remains open with Gov. Brian Kemp barred from seeking a third term.  Atlanta News First
  • MARTA officials announced that renovations at East Lake Station are delayed due to unforeseen challenges — a February rainstorm causing flooding and the added complexity of removing and installing a new south bridge. The south entrance remains open and a new closure date will be set once the new north elevator becomes operational in early April.  The Champion

  • In March, 25 restaurants opened across metro Atlanta, including Decatur’s Q Korean BBQ, a Japanese omakase restaurant in Buckhead, and a brunch spot by chef Bryant Williams.
