  • Avondale Estates Garden Club will host its annual plant sale on Saturday, April 19 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. outside the Lake House (59 Lakeshore Dr.) where hundreds of plants suited for the local climate and children’s gardening activities will be available; proceeds will support local environmental projects and charities.  Decaturish

CRIME NEWS

  • DeKalb County police say a woman died after being shot in a motel room at Studio 6 on the 1700 block of Crescent Centre Boulevard Tuesday morning — officers are reviewing surveillance footage and investigating a man seen near the room.  Atlanta News First
  • A DeKalb County man was sentenced to 20 years in prison — 15 in confinement and the remainder on probation — for attacking and robbing 93‐year‐old veteran Arthur Johnson outside a local pharmacy on July 25th; Johnson, who had been asleep in his car, woke to find himself being choked before his phone, wallet, and keys were stolen, and he was later hospitalized and died four months afterward.  Fox 5 Atlanta

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Georgia taxpayers have until May 1 to file their 2024 income tax returns after FEMA declared a disaster due to Hurricane Helene. Tax experts warn residents to avoid scams and advise verifying any IRS communications using official channels.  FOX 5 Atlanta
  • Federal aid funds from ARC were awarded to two transportation projects on North Druid Hills Road, with about $4 million set aside to improve intersections at Lavista and Clairmont Roads—projects chosen from over 100 proposals. County officials say the upgrades aim to reduce congestion and crashes, though a timeline has not yet been released.  The Champion
  • The DeKalb County Commission will consider reducing the minimum square footage for single-family homes from about 1,800 to 1,400 in R-75 and R-85 zones at its April 22 meeting. The proposal aims to expand housing options as local residents face rising affordability challenges and increasing demand for smaller, more affordable homes.  Decaturish
