  • DeKalb County Sanitation Division will host a free paper shredding event on Saturday, May 17, from 8 a.m. — noon at its Central Transfer Station at 3720 Leroy Scott Drive. DeKalb County residents will be allowed to shred up to ten standard-size boxes of documents, including sensitive personal papers.  On Common Ground News
  • DeKalb County Police Department is hosting the Spring 2025 Safety Fair on April 26 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Sunshine Shopping Center in Decatur — the event will offer free health screenings from Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, Kaiser Permanente and the County Board of Health along with car safety checks, VIN etching services, gun safety education and prizes including furniture raffles for all ages.  The Champion

CRIME NEWS

  • DeKalb County police identified the victim and suspect from a fatal shooting Saturday on Derwin Brown Drive—25-year-old Kaaylynn Jackson died after being shot while living with 24-year-old Janai Colbert, who was arrested on a malice murder charge.  WSB-TV
  • A judge sentenced multiple suspects for drug trafficking, including Dunwoody ring leader Karla Lopez-Delgado—who ran an operation distributing fentanyl, meth and cocaine from her two-bedroom apartment shared with her four-year-old daughter after agents discovered large quantities of drugs and text messages with an incarcerated accomplice.  WSB-TV

  • The DeKalb County Police Department will host a spring 2025 safety fair on April 26 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Sunshine Shopping Center—attendees will receive free health screenings, teeth cleanings, and eye exams along with car safety checks, gun safety education, VIN etching, and prize giveaways including furniture, televisions, and bicycles.  The Champion
  • DeKalb County CEO Lorraine Cochran-Johnson — now 100 days in office — raised water and sewer rates that start on July 1, increased police pay on March 1, and made key staffing changes by appointing interim leaders. She also issued an order to freeze new spending and hiring in her office because federal funds dropped.  Decaturish
  • The DeKalb County Commission will meet today at 9 a.m. at 178 Sams Street in Decatur to consider a 100% clean energy and transportation plan that sets goals for renewable upgrades and electric vehicle chargers by 2026 — the meeting will also review budget amendments, changes to Doraville’s sanitation services, surplus property designations, and traffic signal project requests.  Decaturish
