  • Legacy Park Community Day and the Decatur Earth Day Festival will be held on April 26 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Legacy Park, 500 S. Columbia Drive — the event will feature interactive nature walks, art murals, vendor booths, Tai Chi demonstrations, and a plant sale along with the announcement of the first Hometown Habitats winner to promote local sustainability.  Decaturish

CRIME NEWS

  • A Stone Mountain man, Rontell Devon Shelton, was convicted of murder and other crimes for two shootings at an apartment complex in December 2019—he shot and killed 28-year-old Jordan McPherson during a dog dispute and received a life sentence with no parole plus 25 extra years.  Fox 5 Atlanta
  • DeKalb County police arrested 24-year-old Janai Colbert after 25-year-old Kaaylynn Jackson was fatally shot Saturday night at a home on Derwin Brown Drive and she later died at the hospital—Colbert faces a malice murder charge.  FOX 5 Atlanta
  • Stone Mountain man Rontell Devon Shelton, 40, was convicted by a jury on April 18 and sentenced to life without the possibility of parole plus 25 years—he shot two men at an apartment complex in Decatur, including a fatal shooting on December 30, 2019.  On Common Ground News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Summer break is coming as City Schools of Decatur finish on May 23 and DeKalb County School District wraps up on May 29—local day camps and classes will run from May through July to keep kids engaged, and parents are encouraged to sign up early as many programs fill quickly.  The Champion
  • On April 21, the DeKalb County School District Board approved a $141.6 million contract with The Gilbane Building Company to build new Sequoyah Middle and High Schools using funds from ESPLOST VI and an additional $87 million approved earlier—this project will have a guaranteed maximum price of $233 million. Board member Whitney McGinniss opposed the move over funding concerns, but the board voted 5-1 to proceed.  Atlanta News First

  • Atlanta and DeKalb County are planning to spend billions on water and sewer system repairs while records show many customers owe over $500,000 each, mostly from multifamily properties—officials are working on new payment plans and rate hikes to cover the costs. Officials say the debt—arising from decades of deferred maintenance and billing issues—raises questions about collection practices as they push to fund mandated fixes.  The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
