COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Olga Westfall, a Ukrainian immigrant and VA chaplain at a local hospital, had a hard time in Ukraine in 1989 but found faith and a new path in life. Now in the Air Force Reserves and a resident of Greater Decatur, she helps veterans and raises funds for Ukraine—her work shows that hope can grow from even the darkest moments.  Decaturish
  • Two longtime residents of a DeKalb County apartment complex near Decatur said unlivable conditions—including a collapsed ceiling, leaking water from the commode, broken air conditioning, a nonworking stove and a rat infestation—forced them to seek repairs after repeated calls went unanswered despite paid rent. Management provided a temporary fix and said more repairs were scheduled for Monday, though residents worry that the core issues remain unresolved.  WSB-TV

CRIME NEWS

  • Police said two people were shot during an attempted robbery on a MARTA train – an ongoing investigation is underway.  Atlanta News First
  • DeKalb County police reported that on May 18 at 10:35 a.m. a two-vehicle crash on the 2600 block of River Road resulted in one death while the other driver was taken to a nearby hospital— investigators are still determining the cause.  FOX 5 Atlanta

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Decatur High School’s Mock Trial team earned a school-best fourth place out of 47 teams at the National Championship held in Phoenix from May 7—10 after winning their second state championship in March—team members Liliah Didier-Sober and Ben Hastie won individual awards for their performances.  Decaturish

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On May 18, voting rights groups told a federal appeals court that Georgia’s redrawn maps still harm Black voters because lawmakers did not fully address illegal vote dilution in parts of Atlanta’s suburbs and metro. If the court upholds the challenges, judges may require new district lines that could be used through upcoming state elections — the decision will be a key test of voter rights in Georgia.  FOX 5 Atlanta
  • Today the Decatur City Commission will meet at 7:30 p.m. at Decatur City Hall—509 N. McDonough Street—and via Zoom to consider a $20,900 change order with CSX Transportation for the Atlanta Avenue railroad crossing project while holding dinner at 5 p.m. and work sessions at 5:30 and 6 p.m. to hear presentations from the Decatur Youth Council and the Environmental Sustainability Board; the meeting will also review an agreement with Atlanta Gas Light to relocate a natural gas main and adjustments to the local millage rate.  Decaturish

  • Metro Atlanta saw home listings increase about 50% in April while sales fell 3%, giving buyers more options to negotiate fees. Realtor Stacey Elgin said buyers might ask for help with closing costs or repairs.  WSB-TV
