CULTURE NEWS

  • The Means family, which has promoted the arts for nearly 30 years, runs over 75 studio spaces in Avondale Estates’ Rail Arts district for artists working in many styles — they are now working with the city on exterior renovations to unite Little Tree Art Studios and Globe Arts Center— a waitlist of around 40 applicants shows the area’s strong demand for affordable creative spaces.  Decaturish

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Wealth Enhancement said Decatur residents can lower energy bills by up to 25% and improve home comfort with simple upgrades like LED bulbs, sealing leaks — and using solar panels. The report added that eligible home improvements may earn tax credits up to $3,200 to help cover costs.  WSB-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On May 17, over 100 people gathered on Decatur Square for government transparency and marched to the post office to mail letters to local elected officials, organizers said. The local civil rights group STAND—formed in February—has filed FOIA requests to investigate federal job firings and plans to continue demanding accountability.  Decaturish
  • DeKalb County CEO Lorraine Cochran-Johnson delivered her 2025 State of the County Address on May 8 at Assembly Studios Atlanta, detailing a balanced $1.8 billion budget, a $4.27 billion infrastructure investment, and measures to safeguard public safety. She explained that funds were reallocated to boost police pay, and she launched a $2 million Real Time Crime Center & a pilot drone first responder program as part of efforts to make government more transparent and efficient.  The Champion
  • At its May 5 meeting, the Decatur City Commission approved a resolution to form a reparations task force—comprising three residents with ties to Beacon Hill or Oakhurst, two historians, two Beacon Hill Black Alliance members, a legal expert, a youth representative, a city commissioner and a Better Together Advisory Board member—to research past injustices and propose memorial and economic equity measures; the task force will gather records and interview descendants within 60 days with $25,000 in funding supporting this work.  Decaturish
