  • DeKalb County nonprofit InCommunity hosted its 2026 Limitless Gala on May 16, raising over $380,000 to fund programs for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities across Georgia. The event featured a cocktail reception, dinner, auctions, and a performance by Orchestra SOOP (a musical group of individuals with IDD).  The Champion
  • With school out for summer, families in Decatur can explore local attractions — including Tellus Science Museum, Georgia Safari Wild Animal Park, the new Play Street Museum and free hikes at Arabia Mountain and EMBARC Youth Farm.  The Champion

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Georgia Power will lower bills starting in June (with an average saving of $4.04 per month) after the PSC approved the rate plan. This move is expected to save customers $285 million this year as energy use rises with summer.  WSB-TV

  • Twelve-year-old Sarv Dharavane from Peachtree Middle School earned third place at the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. and his principal praised his confidence and hard work on stage.  WSB-TV
  • City Schools superintendent Gyimah Whitaker is under investigation after a May 28 board meeting called for an independent review amid concerns about podcasts recorded at her husband’s studio. Protestors at the proposed Early Childhood Learning Center site urged more transparency (follow-up details pending) as the review proceeds.  The Champion

  • After heavy rain followed a prolonged drought, Decatur residents are urged to inspect trees using a free 15-minute DIY survey from the Georgia Forestry Commission. The survey spots warning signs that may lead to tree failures as rain continues, and residents should hire a certified arborist if needed.  Atlanta News First

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • I-285 will be closed this weekend, and drivers are advised to plan alternate routes to avoid delays. Local officials expect heavy traffic as crews work on maintenance throughout the area.  Atlanta News First
  • DeKalb County Commission approved moving a planned homeless day center to 3592 Flat Shoals Road in Greater Decatur; it will open on June 1 and operate 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday while offering case management, counseling, meals and showers for unhoused residents.  Decaturish

  • Channel 2 reported a collapsed apartment ceiling — management quickly repaired it to restore safe living conditions in the building. Residents can now use their apartments without worry.  WSB-TV
