COMMUNITY NEWS

  • City contractors grading near the north entrance of Legacy Park found a brick vault measuring 2 ft by 4 ft by 2 ft while paving a multiuse path that connects the park to the East Decatur Greenway—officials are investigating if it is a burial vault from the former orphanage dating back to 1873, and a recent ground-penetrating radar scan is pending results to guide next steps.  The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • DeKalb County CEO Lorraine Cochran-Johnson delivered the first Employee State of the County address to over 1,000 county employees and stakeholders. She outlined a new vision for reimagining the county and introduced benefit programs like a homebuyer program + elder care leave to support staff.  DeKalb County
  • Decatur City officials approved a $1.9 million contract with Blount Construction Company for the West Howard Avenue cycle track and traffic calming project that will begin in about six weeks and remove 197 colorful planters—this project will narrow the road to two lanes and take roughly seven months to complete. The plan also calls for installing permanent landscape islands and a two-way cycle track while keeping the existing rail crossing in service.  Decaturish
  • DeKalb County officials proposed a property tax increase for 2025 as rising values force a rate above the rollback level while the overall millage rate stays unchanged—many homeowners will still receive tax relief. Public hearings will be held at 178 Sams Street, Decatur in Multipurpose Room A1201 on Tuesday, June 24 at 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. and Tuesday, July 8 at 10 a.m., with final approval expected after the July 8 hearing.  Fox 5 Atlanta
