- ➤ Decatur residents will attend the Atlanta Juneteenth Parade and Music Festival on June 19 as organizers will honor the day the last enslaved people learned of the Emancipation Proclamation — a historic reminder of freedom. Atlanta News First

- ➤ At its June 13 meeting, the Decatur Downtown Development Authority supported City Schools of Decatur’s plan to build an early learning center at 346 W. Trinity Place, a site that will keep some green space for public use. The center will serve children ages 0-4 and let Decatur High School expand its career training program by moving the Frasier Center. Decaturish
- ➤ Lucas Medina, a rising senior at Decatur High School, won first place in Georgia’s Trig-Star trigonometry competition on May 21—earning a $1,000 prize and a spot in the national contest. His math teacher Joe Hopkins also received the First Place Trig-Star Teacher award for guiding his preparation. Decaturish

- ➤ DeKalb County reported that the number of court-held animals at its shelter dropped from 61 on May 13, 2024 to 35 on May 14, as new cost-of-care measures led to earlier surrenders by defendants. County attorneys processed 184 surrenders in the last year—helping reduce the shelter’s court-held population to below 5%. Decaturish
- ➤ Georgia Power will replace old high-voltage lines along East Ponce de Leon and East College with new poles and transmission lines starting in Spring 2027 after residents opposed the original route on Sycamore Street — officials added a new section at Sam’s Crossing to keep the lines out of the historic residential area.
