Construction of a multiuse path near Legacy Park was halted last month when contractors found a brick vault—an investigation using ground-penetrating radar suggests it may cover 33 unmarked burials from as early as the 1880s, including many children.

City officials said they will work to memorialize the burials while exploring alternate plans for the project.

Gas South’s Fuel for Good initiative is in its eighth year and will award up to $100,000 to two nonprofits after receiving over 390 applications; customers began voting on six finalists on June 17, including Tucker groups Friends of Disabled Adults and Children and Lekotek of Georgia. The organizations help meet children’s basic needs, healthcare and education — a boost for local families.
