- ➤ Police and other law enforcement officials across the county will host annual National Night Out events on Aug. 5 at venues in Brookhaven, Chamblee, Dunwoody & Stonecrest, while Stone Mountain will host its free, family-friendly event on July 26 from noon to 4 p.m. The events will feature safety demonstrations, educational exhibits and activities to build stronger ties between officers and local residents. - ➤ DeKalb County will host its 5th Annual Stuff the Bus School Supply Drive on Saturday, July 26 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.—CEO Lorraine Cochran Johnson will lead the event as community members drop off school supplies at South DeKalb Mall, Northlake Mall, and Dunwoody City Hall to help equip students for the school year. - ➤ Decatur is auctioning off planters removed from West Howard Avenue as part of the Reimagine West Howard project. An online auction runs today through Friday for damaged units and an in-person auction will be held Saturday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Decatur Public Works at 2635 Talley Street—buyers must pick up items by 5 p.m. and pay with cash or credit card; proceeds will support honors for Beacon Hill Community as the street transforms. - ➤ The DeKalb County tax commissioner's office is offering property tax seminars for homeowners and community groups as tax bills will be mailed later in August. Tax Commissioner Irvin Johnson (since 2016) said the in-person and online sessions help explain tax bills and homestead exemptions. On Common Ground News
- ➤ On July 22, the DeKalb County Commission approved a contract with the Urban League to serve as a water billing advocate and postponed the planned rate increase to protect vulnerable customers from shut-offs—Urban League will soon hire staff to launch discount, amnesty, and dispute resolution programs.
