ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Fire crews responded quickly to a townhome fire at North Decatur Gardens on Church Street on Monday morning and rescued a man who was hospitalized with serious burns as delays occurred due to the neighborhood’s tight layout.  Fox 5 Atlanta

CRIME NEWS

  • DeKalb County police charged three men after a chase began on I-20 on Sunday afternoon when a driver pulled over for speeding, tossed guns from the car and crashed in a neighborhood—one suspect was taken into custody while the two passengers will face charges after hospital release, with no injuries reported.  WSB-TV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • DeKalb County announced that cooling centers will open from July 28 to July 31 to help residents cope with extreme heat as the National Weather Service forecasts heat indices over 100 degrees. The centers are set up at local recreation centers, libraries and other facilities, with some in Decatur at Mason Mill Recreation Center + Exchange Park Intergeneration Center offering free water and pool access.  WSB-TV

HEALTH NEWS

  • A heat advisory went into effect Monday as dangerous temperatures rose and cooling centers opened across metro Atlanta—several, including Mason Mill Recreation Center, Covington Library, and Decatur Library, serve those without air conditioning. Transportation assistance is available for residents who need it.  Atlanta News First

  • Eighth grader Maddie Graham of Druid Hills Middle School was chosen to represent Georgia in USA Swimming’s Championship in Orlando — a competition for 36 swimmers ages 11-14 running through Aug. 2. She is excited to race in the breaststroke event and plans to do her best.  The Champion
