CRIME NEWS

  • DeKalb County Police are asking for public help finding four missing persons in two cases—12-year-old Elijah and 13-year-old Ramonte, last seen on July 31st between 5:30 and 6 p.m. in the 1800 block of Corduroy Court, and 49-year-old Bryant Nunn with his one-year-old granddaughter, Cimani, last seen leaving the 3000 block of Chaffey Circle in Decatur—and urge anyone with information to call 770-724-7710 or 911.  Fox 5 Atlanta
  • DeKalb County Police will distribute free gun safes on Saturday, Aug. 9—from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at select precincts—to help gun owners store firearms safely after a 5-year-old boy was accidentally shot when he found a gun in his mother’s purse.  Fox 5 Atlanta

EDUCATION NEWS

  • MARTA is celebrating the start of the school year with a free Reading and Riding Family Day today at Decatur Station from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Families can enjoy a free Popsicle from MokiPops, a mindfulness moment by Trinidad James, comic book making, prize giveaways, a reading by award-winning author Derrick Barnes, and the first 100 families will receive a free copy of his newest book (Brave and King Book Shop will also be present).  Fox 5 Atlanta
  • Georgia lawmakers passed the Distraction Free Education Act, which bans K-8 student cell phone use from bell to bell starting in 2026; districts must have a plan by Jan. 1, and while Cobb County will require phones to be on silent in backpacks, Marietta and Rockdale already use locked pouches and an Atlanta firm has launched a cyber pouch that cuts off connectivity—both solutions cost about $25 to $30 per unit. This law highlights the ongoing debate between keeping students focused and ensuring safety during emergencies.  Atlanta News First

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Moody’s lowered the outlook on DeKalb County’s water and sewer fund last week because the county planned a much bigger fix than expected, which may force it to pay more on bonds for a $4.3 billion project over the next seven years. County leaders postponed the first large rate hike and are planning 10% annual increases to support the work while the overall credit rating stays stable — officials said the steps are needed after years of underinvestment.  The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
  • Faith Apostolic Church said it housed 12 minors after a state-approved facility flooded — the church now faces a citation and has issued a strong response.  Atlanta News First
