  • Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. reportedly flew to Atlanta Monday morning to visit the CDC—possibly to meet with director Susan Monarez—after a violent attack on August 8 left a DeKalb County officer dead, damaged CDC windows, and forced 92 children to remain at a daycare until it was declared safe+some protesters and former staff members criticized his visit.  Fox 5 Atlanta
  • Police said that a shooting near CDC headquarters in Atlanta on August 9 left two people dead when 30-year-old Patrick Joseph White, who had expressed concerns about the COVID-19 vaccine, fired at several buildings—officials are investigating if his anti-vaccine views sparked the attack.  Fox 5 Atlanta
  • DeKalb County police officer David Rose was fatally injured last Friday while answering a call for help outside the CDC, and his family launched an online fundraiser—raising nearly $30,000 as of early Monday.  The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

EDUCATION NEWS

  • City Schools of Decatur Board of Education will update its capital improvement plan and propose a revised Early Childhood Learning Center design today at the Elizabeth Wilson School Support Center—work sessions begin at 3:40 p.m. The new option adds a second story and more green space, increasing the cost from $22 million to $30 million and shifting groundbreaking from December to April 2026—delaying the center's opening from fall 2027 to fall 2028.  Decaturish

  • City workers began construction on West Howard Avenue on Monday by removing planters and permanently reducing the travel lanes from four to two as part of the Reimagine West Howard project to improve safety for pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists — future plans include landscaped islands and a two-way cycle track along the CSX right-of-way.  Decaturish
