  • Officer David Rose was fatally shot Aug. 8 while responding to an active shooter call near the CDC campus—memorials were set up and fund drives raised support for his family even as funeral plans have not been announced.  Fox 5 Atlanta
  • A fundraiser for a fallen DeKalb officer—killed near CDC and Emory University—has raised over $300K to benefit his family while police search for the suspect.  Atlanta News First

CULTURE NEWS

  • Six Flags Over Georgia has announced that Fright Fest returns this fall with two new haunted attractions inspired by The Conjuring Universe and SAW: Legacy of Terror. Guests who purchase a Haunted Attractions Pass will have access to six scare zones—three live shows and three haunted mazes—on select nights from Sept. 13 through Nov. 2.  WSB-TV
  • Country singer-songwriter Ashland Craft is set to perform her first full-band show at Eddie’s Attic in Decatur on Aug. 29 at 9 p.m.—she will present originals, covers, and unreleased tracks from her new album Dive Bar Beauty Queen that took over a year to complete. EDUCATION NEWS

  • DeKalb County parents are upset that elementary students now have only 15 minutes of recess after schools increased academic instruction, and they met to ask for 30 minutes instead. They will speak again on Sept. 8 to push for change — aiming to help kids reset and focus better.  Fox 5 Atlanta
  • Parents have voiced concerns over reduced recess time at DeKalb County Schools—fearing the change will limit children’s play and learning time.  Atlanta News First

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Nearly 58,000 voters got mailers from DeKalb County in July that urge them to update registration info and stay active for voting. Voters have 30 days to respond and avoid inactive status (updates can be made online, by mail, or at the local elections office).  WSB-TV

HEALTH NEWS

  • On August 12, a cat in the Stone Mountain area was captured and euthanized after testing positive for rabies—marking the third recent case reported in the county, which remains endemic for the virus.  Fox 5 Atlanta
