ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Fifteen people died in car crashes across Georgia over Labor Day weekend—most in metro Atlanta with additional fatalities in Cartersville, Forsyth, Hall, Clayton, DeKalb, Villa Rica, LaGrange, Monroe, Rincon, and Thomasville, while troopers made over 19,500 traffic stops that resulted in more than 9,800 citations.  Atlanta News First

CRIME NEWS

  • A former DeKalb commissioner, Stanley Watson, was ordered by a federal appeals court to pay $100,000 to two Decatur women after he falsely accused them of theft at Tanqueray Lounge in 2012—judges ruled his actions led to loss of liberty and caused health issues.  The Champion
  • A federal appeals court ruled on Aug. 4 that former DeKalb County commissioner Stanley Watson must pay $100,000 in damages and legal costs to two women he falsely accused of theft at Tanqueray Lounge in Decatur—he resigned in 2016 and pled guilty in 2017 to misusing public funds.  The Champion

  • Agnes Scott College will bring back its monthly First Friday Vendor Fair on Sept. 5 from 2-4 p.m. at the Science Quad on 141 E. College Ave in Decatur - this free event celebrates food, live music and entrepreneurship and marks the first fair of the new school year.  Decaturish

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • DeKalb County released a study showing its urban tree canopy increased from 58% in 2010 to over 60% in 2023—findings based on satellite imagery and GIS mapping. The study noted benefits like carbon sequestration and stormwater runoff reduction and recommended stronger urban forest management.  WSB-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Decatur City Commission reviewed a report called NOAH that shows over 550 potential rental units and 220 for-sale homes and explains that without city action affordable housing may vanish—limiting options for essential workers, seniors and moderate-income residents. A vote on the plan has not been held yet.  WSB-TV
  • At its Sept.2 meeting, the Decatur City Commission lowered speed limits on Scott Boulevard, College Avenue, South Candler Street, Clairemont Avenue and a part of Commerce Drive—and approved emergency funds for repairing the Oakhurst Pool heater, buying handguns for police, granting a beverage license for Roaring Social, and purchasing four Kubota vehicles for waste collection.  Atlanta News First
