  • Cierra Scott, a preschool administrator in Decatur and Lithonia resident, won awards in a March pageant round and will compete for national titles in Orlando from November 21 to 30—she is raising funds to cover costs and start a program to help local children improve reading skills.  The Champion

BUSINESS NEWS

  • DeKalb County announced a $28.9M retail development called Candler Crossing along Candler Road in southwest DeKalb County—featuring a 50,325‑square‑foot Publix and an 11,200‑square‑foot retail building available at below‑market rent. Officials said the development follows the Kroger closure at Belvedere Plaza—intended to improve local grocery access.  Atlanta News First

CULTURE NEWS

  • Avondale Arts Alliance launches its exhibit Material Impressions at Avondale Arts Center, where 44 local artists display works in textiles, mud and glass. The free opening reception is today, 6—9 p.m., and the exhibit will close on Oct 25.  Decaturish

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Twelve new welders graduated on Friday from the City of Refuge and Norfolk Southern's 10-week program, and most already have jobs lined up or are in interview processes. The program will start a new session in mid-October, which is already full.  Atlanta News First
  • Global Village Project broke ground on a new campus on 3.2 acres at 2135 Shamrock Drive in Greater Decatur and plans to double its capacity to serve 100 students. The nonprofit serving middle school refugee girls will open the campus in Fall 2026 as part of its New Village 100 Capital Campaign — the project is estimated to cost $7.8 million.  Decaturish

  • Allisha Gray of the Atlanta Dream — who set career highs in points, rebounds, assists, and three-pointers — has been named a finalist for the WNBA MVP award after her team lost in the first round. The award winner will be announced Sunday at 11:30 a.m.  Atlanta News First
