COMMUNITY NEWS

  • More than 2,000 people gathered at Truist Park in Cobb County on Sept. 18 to honor firefighter Preston Fant, who died on Sept. 8 while fighting a fire in Lithonia. Fire officials and his family celebrated his 21-year service—declaring Master Firefighter Fant Day in his memory—recognizing his sacrifice and dedication.  The Champion

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Local entrepreneur Jasmine Budhwani opened the newest Bio Blow Dry Bar in Dunwoody on Sept. 12 to offer fast wash and blow dry services for busy women. The Decatur native with a strong business background said the salon—designed for all hair types—will add 10 to 15 local jobs and is the first of three planned shops in Georgia.  The Champion

EDUCATION NEWS

  • DeKalb County school officials are reviewing the future of Druid Hills High School—the district’s oldest building—after complaints about leaks and exposed wiring. Public meetings will be held on September 30, October 7, and October 20 to gather community input.  Fox 5 Atlanta

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today at 9 a.m. the DeKalb County Commission in Decatur will consider a resolution to allow the county to start talks to reclaim land swapped with Blackhall Real Estate in 2021 if the firm fails to meet its park improvement promises — this action may let the county keep 2055 Bouldercrest Road and recover 2235 Bouldercrest Road. The meeting will also review proposed changes to zoning rules and plans to reallocate funds for local projects.  Decaturish
  • DeKalb County CEO Lorraine Cochran-Johnson announced the $28.9 million Candler Crossing project that will feature a new Publix, multi-tenant retail space, and public amenities along Candler Road in South DeKalb—responding to community needs after a local grocery closed. The development, unanimously approved by the Board of Commissioners, is expected to create jobs and boost fresh food access for residents.  DeKalb County
  • Mario Guevara, a Hispanic journalist detained by ICE since June 14, marked 100 days behind bars on Monday and wrote a letter saying he will leave with his head held high if deported—he stated this is for doing his work and not for crimes. Lawyers and the ACLU are asking a federal court to free him immediately after a 13-year-old deportation order was reopened.  Atlanta News First

  • Costco recalled more than 3,000 pounds of Kirkland Signature Ahi Tuna Wasabi Poke due to listeria contamination — consumers with products marked Sept. 18 or Sept. 22 are urged to throw them away and return to Costco for a refund.  Fox 5 Atlanta
  • Last week, the CDC Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices voted to end universal COVID-19 vaccine recommendations and move to shared clinical decision-making so people first speak with their healthcare providers. Georgia health officials are waiting for federal sign-off+to update state guidelines and keep vaccine costs covered by insurance.  Atlanta News First

  • The Southwest DeKalb Panthers beat the St- Pius Golden Lions 41-10 in a regional game on Sept. 19 at George B- Maloof Stadium. The win improved the Panthers' record to 4-1 and featured a 33-yard touchdown run by Tamir Rudolph, while St- Pius scored only a touchdown and a field goal.  The Champion
