COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Thursday, some Decatur diners were surprised by a pop-up concert when the Community Choir performed at The Super Jenny—FOX 5 photojournalist Billy Heath captured the event. The concert added a unique touch to the meal as guests enjoyed an unexpected musical treat.  Fox 5 Atlanta

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Druid Hills High School may be sold as DeKalb County Schools considers three options, including renovating the 1927 campus and relocating the school, but no final decision has been made. Two meetings are set for Oct 7 and Oct 20 at 6 p.m. & a decision is expected in November.  Atlanta News First
  • The Global Village Project Middle School in Decatur broke ground on an eight million dollars expansion to double its capacity from 45 to 100 students, with plans to open its new campus by August when construction wraps up next spring—school leaders say the project is mainly funded by private donations and a one million dollars New Market Tax Credit investment that will add two new buildings of six classrooms each. The expansion will help refugee girls catch up on missed learning.  Fox 5 Atlanta
  • Congressman Hank Johnson announced that his 2025 Congressional App Challenge is accepting entries from middle and high school students in Georgia’s 4th district through Oct. 30. Judges will review submissions from Nov. 5 to Dec. 1—winners receive special recognition and may have their app featured in the U.S. Capitol.  The Champion
  • On Sept. 29, the DeKalb County School District saw its graduation rate rise to 81.4 percent—a 2.7-point gain and the highest in over 10 years—while City Schools of Decatur reported Decatur High’s rate increased to 96.04 percent, surpassing the state average. Officials said focused student support and improved education strategies helped these gains, and state leaders recognized the progress at a recent press event.  The Champion

  • MARTA riders described the ghost bus as a term for unreliable bus service—making it hard for commuters to plan their trips.  Fox 5 Atlanta
  • Judge Ronald Ramsey, who helped create Stonecrest and mentored leaders in law and politics, died Sept. 25 at 66 after a long battle with cancer—he was known for giving people second chances.  The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
  • Officials in DeKalb County said essential services – public safety, sanitation, water, and emergency operations – continued even after the federal shutdown began on Oct.1. County leaders, including Congressman Hank Johnson, said they are working with state and federal partners and will update residents as more details become available.  The Champion
