COMMUNITY NEWS

  • After officer David Rose was shot at the CDC on Aug. 8 and firefighter Preston Fant died fighting a fire in Lithonia on Sept. 8, the community responded with generous GoFundMe donations—Rose's fundraiser raised over $625,000 while Fant's received more than $86,000.  The Champion
  • The Salvation Army Atlanta Peachcrest Corps will celebrate its 50th anniversary with a series of events in south DeKalb from Oct 10 to 12. The nonprofit will host a Legacy Dinner on Oct 10 at the Peachcrest Corps Center in Decatur from 7 to 9 p.m.—featuring dinner, music, and recognition of Julius Williams—and will hold a free community event on Oct 11 with games, food, and a service followed by a luncheon on Oct 12.  The Champion
  • Oakhurst Porchfest returns Saturday from noon to 7 p.m. with over 200 free performances and vendors scattered around local porches—the community event will end with a closing show at 6 p.m. in Harmony Park with seven ADA-accessible restrooms available.  Decaturish
  • Cyclists will ride in a memorial event on Oct. 12 to honor attorney Ken Rosskopf, who died in August from a cycling crash. Riders will gather at the Hagen Rosskopf law office at 119 N McDonough St at 8:30 a.m.—with bike marshals, repair support, a moment of silence, and the unveiling of a ghost bike and plaque marking his legacy.  Decaturish

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Decatur residents are invited to join the 2025 Joro Spider Spotting Contest, where they can submit clear photos of invasive Joro spiders until Oct. 12 — the contest is managed by UGA’s College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources, and the Southern Integrated Pest Management Center to track the species’ spread.  WSB-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • DeKalb VRE reminded voters in Decatur to prepare for the Nov. 4 Municipal General/Special Election by highlighting key dates such as October 6 for voter registration, October 14 to October 31 for early voting, and November 4 for Election Day. The notice also listed early voting locations with official absentee ballot drop boxes — including at a Decatur church and the DeKalb VRE office — and urged voters to request absentee ballots promptly.  On Common Ground News

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Atlanta Falcons will wear their throwback uniforms—red helmets with black jerseys—to honor a past era in their Monday night game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium against the Bills, who will also use classic uniforms with a white shell and red bison.
