CRIME NEWS

  • Devon Horton, the DeKalb County School District superintendent since 2023, was placed on paid leave after a federal indictment accused him of 17 fraud charges—including wire fraud, embezzlement, and tax fraud—while Norman C. Sauce III was named acting superintendent at an emergency board meeting on Oct. 9.  The Champion

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Decatur School Board will meet on Oct. 14 to discuss possibly closing one K-2 school and redistricting to balance enrollment that has declined — no decision will be made then, as a letter with details is scheduled for Oct. 16 and public hearings for Oct. 29 and Nov. 13. The district also plans to build a new early childhood center to serve local residents.  Decaturish

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Two projects under construction will add grocery stores and retail space to Avondale Estates and nearby Decatur — Galore Market near Sam’s Crossing will offer organic foods and beverages this fall, and Candler Crossing will feature a 50,325-square-foot Publix, mixed-use spaces, and create new jobs with completion scheduled for 2027.  The Champion
