COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local officials announced that the homeless camp sheltering 200 individuals on a community soccer field will be cleared soon to restore normal field use—plans for relocating the occupants are still being developed.  WSB-TV

CRIME NEWS

  • An advocacy group held a candlelight vigil at The Chapel on Sycamore in Decatur on Thursday night to honor domestic violence survivors and victims—participants shared personal experiences and noted the challenges of escaping abuse and finding safe housing.  FOX 5 Atlanta
  • Indicted former DeKalb superintendent Devon Horton resigned on Wednesday yet will remain on the payroll for 30 days per state law—while the school board plans a forensic audit—and parents remain concerned about his hires.  WSB-TV

CULTURE NEWS

  • DeKalb County commissioners and officials will host a free event at The Chapel on Sycamore in Decatur on Oct. 30 from 6 to 8 p.m. to ask residents for ideas on future art projects—local artists and groups will share their thoughts to help guide community plans.  The Champion
  • A mural showing the school’s lion mascots and a quote by Mary McCleod Bethune now greets students, staff and visitors at Mary McCleod Bethune Middle School in Decatur. The artwork was painted in August by the National Council of Negro Women DeKalb Section, the National Black State Troopers Coalition and school staff — and the event included the donation of 25 book bags with supplies and a $1,000 check.  The Champion
  • Best-selling author Jeff Kinney will visit Decatur City Church on Friday, Oct. 24 to celebrate his 20th Diary of A Wimpy Kid book, Partypooper — hosted by Little Shop of Stories. His visit is part of a 10-stop tour that includes surprise school visits with a $1,000 book donation each time, marking the series reaching 300 million sales worldwide.  Decaturish

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The DeKalb County Board of Education accepted Superintendent Devon Horton's resignation effective November 15 after federal authorities indicted him for alleged kickbacks from his former job in Illinois—he was placed on paid leave and the board launched a forensic audit of contracts. Acting Superintendent Norman C. Sauce III was named to lead the district—ensuring schools keep running smoothly.  The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Local leaders, residents, and industry representatives met in Decatur on October 16 to discuss data centers and concerns over energy consumption and water usage—County CEO Lorraine Cochran-Johnson stressed the need for balanced planning—and noted proposals for new centers are under review in the county.  Fox 5 Atlanta

HEALTH NEWS

  • Publix recalled a lot of Rich & Creamy Vanilla Ice Cream after finding that some half-gallon containers may have mismatched French vanilla lids and contain an undeclared egg allergen. The recall applies to products with a June 19th sell-by date sold in Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Florida—customers can return the ice cream for a full refund and no illnesses have been reported.  WSB-TV
