- ➤ The American Red Cross is assisting about 20 people displaced by a large condo fire on Colonial Way in DeKalb County—emergency response teams are providing shelter and support. WSB-TV
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Goodwill of North Georgia in Decatur launched its new Electric Heat Pump Technician Program in March that offers a five week paid training course to earn industry certifications for HVAC roles. More than 25 graduates have received job placements—at local schools and businesses—and the lab is part of the Clean Tech Accelerator initiative to build a clean energy workforce. The Champion
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Decatur became the first city in Georgia to earn the Bird City designation—approved by the city council on September 15—and celebrated the honor on October 17 at Legacy Park with Mayor Pro Tem Tony Powers present. The certification recognizes Decatur’s efforts to help birds by creating safe habitats, reducing light pollution, and limiting window strikes. WSB-TV
- ➤ Monarch butterflies are facing a steep decline and wildlife expert David Mizejewski explained ways for local residents to help them during migration. He suggested planting milkweed (a key food source) to boost their numbers. Fox 5 Atlanta
