  • Atlanta media mogul Tyler Perry donated nearly $1.4 million to help metro Atlanta families facing hunger from reduced SNAP benefits amid the shutdown—his support benefits groups like the Atlanta Community Food Bank, Meals on Wheels Atlanta and Caring for Others.  Atlanta News First

  • Seth Weiner of Your Rocktioneer from DeKalb County hosted a webinar on Oct. 22 that gave nonprofits fresh ideas to boost fundraising with gamified competitions and engaging games. He explained that low cost games can raise more donations—transforming events into lively evenings.  The Champion
  • More than 1,200 flights were canceled early Friday, including 80 in Atlanta, so many travelers switched to rental cars—Hertz said one-way bookings for today increased more than 20% from last year. Hertz urged Congress to pass a clean continuing resolution to end the shutdown and ease travel disruptions.  Atlanta News First

  • DeKalb County School Board will vote Monday on an $18.5 million plan to add new security vestibules in 25 schools. If approved, the project will begin immediately—following a design contract awarded to Lefko Construction in August 2024.  WSB-TV

  • Decatur has been certified as Georgias first 'Bird City' — a recognition for its work improving bird habitats at Legacy Park and other community areas. City officials partnered with Trees Atlanta to remove invasive weeds and plant native trees that protect more than 120 bird species.  Decaturish

  • DeKalb County officials and community partners are taking steps to protect food access as a federal shutdown pauses SNAP funding for over 54,000 households+ they are working with schools, the housing authority, and nonprofit groups to provide meal programs and utility relief, and a mobile market will offer discounted produce starting Nov. 10.  The Champion
