CULTURE NEWS

  • Decatur’s new entertainment spot, Roaring Social Decatur, opened Sept. 18 at 101 W. Ponce de Leon Ave and features a secret entry with a suspendered greeter who shares a password—today the venue hosts Latin night with The C.O.T. Band and a schedule of live music on most nights except Sundays and Mondays.  The Champion

EDUCATION NEWS

  • At Tuesday evening's board meeting, the Decatur Board of Education discussed a plan to ban cellphones and other electronic devices for K-8 students—aiming for distraction-free classrooms and improved academic focus; if approved, the policy will restrict device use on school grounds and during school events while allowing exceptions for students with special educational plans. The measure follows Georgia’s Distraction-Free Education Act, which requires schools to limit personal technology by January.  WSB-TV
  • Parents in Decatur formed the Save Decatur Schools group to oppose a proposal to close five K-2 campuses, including Clairemont Elementary, as the school district planned to merge schools. The school board discussed the proposal Tuesday night—parents raised concerns over transparency and the lack of a delay in finalizing decisions.  FOX 5 Atlanta
  • DeKalb school district is suing social media companies to recover over $4M spent on cellphone lockers, social media guidelines and extra counselors to tackle students' app addiction. The district will ask a federal judge Friday in Atlanta to let the case be heard by a jury.  The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

  • Tires, toilets and other items have been piling up near homes in DeKalb County+officials plan to inspect the area and start a cleanup.  WSB-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • DeKalb County will spend $77 million over five years to add more ambulances and extra service hours to cut emergency call delays—county officials say the plan aims to meet needed standards after a study showed ambulances were busy 80% of the time.  WSB-TV

HEALTH NEWS

  • Veteran Brent Taylor got help for his symptoms at the Shepherd Center's SHARE program in Atlanta—specialists found an undiagnosed brain injury after he was hit at a firing range. Since 2008, the program has provided free, full care to over 850 veterans and first responders through generous donations.  WSB-TV
