  • The DeKalb County Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Affairs will hold a community meeting to discuss future plans for the Alice White Bussey Intergenerational Center on Thursday, Dec. 18 from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Ellenwood Library (4331 River Road) to gather input.  On Common Ground News

  • DeKalb County officials will step up efforts to track illegal tire dumping in Decatur, warning violators that strict enforcement (including fines) is coming.  WSB-TV

  • The Queen's Tea Party is hosting Mrs. Claus Tea Events this season to bring holiday magic to Decatur. Organizers (Tiyaka Bass and Michal Garvey) say the festive tea gatherings will offer community warmth and seasonal treats.  Fox 5 Atlanta

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • CEO Lorraine Cochran-Johnson and county teams launched a $250,000 cleanup on Dec. 12 to remove tires from eight illegal dump sites; they have already removed more than 37,000 tires+with four sites completed and remaining efforts set to finish by Dec. 24 if weather permits.  On Common Ground News

  • DeKalb County will activate warming centers from Sunday, Dec. 14 through Tuesday, Dec. 16 due to forecasted freezing temperatures and hazardous wind chills. Frontline Response International will offer 24-hour services (hot meals, transportation, and case management) with revised Sunday transportation pickups for those in need.  DeKalb County

  • The Southwest DeKalb Panthers jumped out with a fast 12+0 start to defeat the Tucker Tigers in region 5 4A girls’ basketball at Southwest DeKalb on Friday night. Kayla Walton led early scoring with a three-pointer as the Panthers built a strong lead throughout the game.  On Common Ground News
