COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Georgia’s largest diaper bank is facing a critical supply shortage—high costs have made it hard for the organization to buy enough essential supplies for local families. The bank will seek more donations and funding to help meet the growing need.  WSB-TV
  • The family of DeKalb County Fire Rescue Firefighter Preston Fant, who died on Sept. 8 while fighting a blaze in Stone Mountain, has received over $66,000 from donations to support his wife and children. Fire Chief Darnell Fullum honored Fant’s service at a Sept. 11 memorial ceremony—funeral details are pending.  The Champion
  • Bobby Murphy is facing medical problems, and local riders will hold a benefit ride led by Jay Bird — known as The Ice Cream Man — to raise funds for his bills. The ride will pass by his house to show support before moving off to private land for off-roading.  Fox 5 Atlanta

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At its Sept. 15 meeting, the Decatur City Commission renewed the downtown ambassador program—an arrangement with Block by Block that provides cleaning, safety, and visitor services in downtown—to run for a maximum of $607,000. The city, the Downtown Development Authority, and the tourism bureau will each pay about $202,000 while the program adds an extra team leader.  Decaturish

HEALTH NEWS

  • DeKalb Public Health will host a free drive-thru vaccination event on Sept. 27 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Lou Walker Senior Center on 2538 Panola Rd in Lithonia—attendees must bring photo ID and insurance information to receive a choice of flu shots and a COVID-19 vaccine update.  Decaturish

  • Arabia Mountain beat Lakeside 28 to 21 on Sept. 12 at Adams Stadium during Lakeside's homecoming, with Carswell's 29 yard run with 1:12 left in the fourth quarter sealing the win (the win moved the Rams' record to 2 to 2, 1 to 0, while the Vikings fell to 2 to 2, 0 to 1).  The Champion
  • On Sunday, the Atlanta Falcons won 22–6 as Bijan Robinson rushed for 143 yards and Parker Romo made all five of his field-goal attempts in his debut—helping the team hold the Vikings to three turnovers.  Atlanta News First
